How to Become an Entrepreneur

"When you reach an obstacle, turn it into an opportunity. You have the choice. You can overcome and be a winner, or you can allow it to overcome you and be a loser. The choice is yours and yours alone. Refuse to throw in the towel. Go that extra mile that failures refuse to travel. It is far better to be exhausted from success than to be rested from failure."
- Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics

A small business is a risky venture. A home based business is certainly more risky than staying in that solid but uninspiring 9-5 job you’ve had for the last five years. Have you got what it takes to become a home based businessman? What makes a good entrepreneur? Have you got what it takes to become the boss of your own financial destiny? Do you have the X factor that makes you a home based businessman?

The good news is that with a bit of tenacity and experience you can learn to become a successful home based entrepreneur. Here are some tips that will point you in the right direction.

Be a self starter.
Get out of the habit of waiting for instructions from the boss. You are the boss. It’s now up to you to budget, organize time, and run your business. You have become the alpha and omega of your home based business.

Learn to get along with different personalities.
Business owners are required to build up working relationships with a variety of people including customers, vendors, staff, bankers and professionals such as lawyers, accountants or consultants. Learn to deal with a demanding client, an undependable vendor or bad-tempered staff person in the best interest of your home based business.

Make decisions
"The critical ingredient is getting off your butt and doing something.
It's as simple as that. A lot of people have ideas, but there are few who decide to do something about them now. Not tomorrow. Not next week. But today. The true entrepreneur is a doer, not a dreamer."
- Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari and Chuck E. Cheese's

Home based business owners are required to be decisive in their decision making. Decisions must be made quickly, under pressure, and independently.

Work hard
Running a successful home based business is hard work. It is often said that the home based business runs 24/7 and this is not far from the truth. The harder you work the more chance of success.

Plan plan and plan.
Have a good business plan. Failing to plan is planning to fail. Many home based business failures could have been avoided through better planning.

Be motivated at all times.
"An entrepreneur tends to bite off a little more than he can chew hoping he'll quickly learn how to chew it.
- Roy Ash, co-founder of Litton Industries

Running a home based business can be tiresome at stages. Disillusionment can quickly set in with the burden of shouldering all the responsibility. Strong motivation is the key that makes the home based business a success, and sees you through the inevitable lean times.

Be prepared for a change of life.

The first few years of a home based business start¬up can be hard. It involves a total change of lifestyle not only for the entrepreneur but also his family. Home based entrepreneurs can face financial challenges, and marital strain. Be prepared and welcome change. Make change a friend it can be a powerful enemy.

There are a lot of reasons for not starting your own home based business. The true entrepreneur however looks only for the good reasons to starting one up.

• You are your own Boss.
• You get the direct benefit of working long and hard hours, rather than some third party.
• There is unlimited potential for profit and growth.
• There is an element of excitement.
• Operating a home based business will offer endless variety, plenty challenges and great opportunities to learn.
