Choosing the right home based business

There is an unlimited amount of choice when it comes to deciding on what type of business to pursue when it comes to home based businesses. The first decision to make is what type of operation you are going to run from home. There are three broad types of home based business.

1. Operating under a franchise system or creating your own business idea.

2. Providing a service or providing a product.

Franchises

There is a certain amount of comfort in deciding to follow the franchise route. At first glance some of the risk of starting up a home based business is removed. There are definite benefits to going with a franchise. Some of them are as follows:

Benefits

• A proven product or a service. The franchise has already established a reputation and the product is known to the market.
• The franchisor usually handles all the marketing and advertising of the product. This is a great cost benefit due to the high cost of advertising.
• Some Franchisors offer financial and business advice and as part of their package.
• Franchisors offer training in all aspects of the business.
• Selling the business is easier as a franchise especially if the Franchisor has a buyer lined up.
• Being a franchise can remove the pain of sourcing goods. All supplies are organized by the franchisor.

Disadvantages

• There is a certain loss of independence as you have to follow certain franchise rules regulations and standards.
• There is the franchise fee. This can be substantial in some cases. All that support does not come for free.
• Franchisors usually do not allow for any deviation from the product or service line. There is little room for inventiveness or individuality.
• Growth potential may be limited due to territorial restraints and other trading constraints

These factors need to be weighed up carefully in choosing whether to go the franchise or own business route when setting up your home based business. It’s a simple trade off of risk against a measure of security at a financial cost.

The next decision to be made is whether your home based business will offer a service or a product.

Services

It is attractive for those skilled or educated in certain disciplines to offer these as the core of their home based business. You may be an accountant or a bookkeeper, or a skilled life couch, or just a great organizer and be able to offer personal assistance to busy executives. The great thing about offering a service based on your skill is that there is no need to outlay cash for buying in goods and keeping stock. If you have a skill that is in demand then this may be the way to go.

Products

Selling a product is another form of home based business. It requires a lot more capital investment than selling a service. This may be the way to go if you have a great product to sell, and a ready market for that product. The product can be your own idea or just a buy and sell situation.

Whether you go with a franchise or a selling a service or selling a product it is up to you on creating a successful home based business. Your upfront decision can be fundamental to the future success of the home based business.
