Which Home Based Business is Right for You?

A Brief Overview of MLM, Affiliate Marketing and Direct Sales Businesses

When you finally decide that getting into a home-based business is the path that you really want to pursue, it’s often hard to decide where you want to start. There are so many interesting choices and all of them are promising you fantastic income possibilities. So which one should you pick? Well, I’m about to help you out with that. Let’s go over some of the more commonly found business opportunities first; then you should be able to get a better idea of what you want to get involved in.

MLM (Multi-Level Marketing)

Multi-level marketing is one of many options that you have available when you are trying to choose a home-based business. This is basically a system where a parent company is distributing their products to the consumer through the means of direct selling and referrals. The referrals commonly come from consultants or independent sales associates that are affiliated with the parent company.

Downlines can be developed (the first line recruits other individuals to market or sell the product and they recruit others and so on) and this ultimately generates more awareness and more sales. These people are unsalaried and only make money if they can manage to sell the product. These products can also be purchased at wholesale prices and distributed at retail prices for profit. The distributors are also able to earn commissions on any sales generated by their efforts.

The negatives: It is often difficult to determine the legitimacy of an MLM as they are often confused with pyramid schemes. A pyramid scheme is one that encourages a person to buy more of a product than they can actually sell. Steer clear of those! It’s also difficult to try to get others involved sometimes because they feel like it may be a pyramid scheme!

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is pretty simple to explain. You find a company that has a great and marketable product or service. You contact the company to see if they accept affiliates or pay affiliates and they usually generate a link for you or a banner for you to place on a webpage of your site. You are basically advertising for them in the hope that your efforts generate a sale, though some companies pay you on the basis of members or sign-ups as well.

If you have a blog site or another website that you maintain, it would be fairly simple for you to do. Even if you don’t have one, they are fairly easy to create nowadays and the expenses are minimal. The best thing is that if you can get someone to click on that link, your expenses could be paid for the month – or two or three – and you can also generate some extra income in the process. This is why so many people choose to go with affiliate marketing. It’s a fairly simple, set-it-up-and-go process.

Direct Sales

Direct selling is the term used when you market products through a demonstration, phone call or meeting. This is usually for such things as insurance, where it takes a little bit more explanation. Many people are using the internet for these direct sales tactics as well; thanks to digital media.

If you have a product that you want to market online, but it requires a lot of information before someone in their right mind would even think of purchasing it, consider a video for your site. Even a sound clip would help you market the product a little bit better.

The only negative side to direct sales, in my opinion, is that it can often turn into kind of a pyramid scheme. Don’t jump the gun; only take the amount of product that you really know you can sell. You don’t want to get in over your head.

Well, that information should help you guide yourself into a home-based business that will be profitable and make you happier. Just make sure to watch out for common pitfalls and the scheming scammers along the way. Whatever your decision, make sure it’s an educated one!
