Being a Leader not a Follower

Leadership is the ability or even necessity to inspire. A Leader, is one who instills passion and direction to an individual or group of individuals.

Deciding to start up a home business and leave ones steady job is a big step. Being employed at a large corporation as an employee is very different from being your own boss. An employee requires that you obey the rules and regulations of the company you work for and that you carry out the wishes of your boss. Employees are followers and often in a corporate environment leadership is actively discouraged. When one decides to embark on the route of creating a home based business, it necessitates a total change of mindset. It requires the mindset of a leader.

Learning leadership qualities after being a follower employee, or a housewife, for many years can be a traumatic transition. It is however a necessary transition because home based businesses demand that “employees” become leaders and entrepreneurs. Home based business is all about becoming a leader.

Just what is a leader mindset when compared to that of a follower?

When leaders make a mistake, they say, "I was wrong."
When followers make mistakes, they say, "It wasn't my fault."

1. A leader works harder than a follower and has more time;
a follower is always "too busy" to do what is necessary.

2. A leader goes through a problem;
a follower goes around it and never gets past it.

3. A leader makes and keeps commitments;
a follower makes and forgets promises.

4. A leader says, "I'm good, but not as good as I ought to be;"
a follower says, "I'm not as bad as a lot of other people."

5. Leaders listen;
followers just wait until it's their turn to talk.

6. Leaders respect those who are superior to them and try to learn something from them;
followers resent those who are superior to them and try to find chinks in their armor.

7. Leaders feel responsible for more than their job;
followers say, "I only work here."

8. A leader says, "There ought to be a better way to do this;"
followers say, "That's the way it's always been done here."

I think you can get the idea from the above. When you operate your home based business it is necessary to adopt the mindset of the leader. It’s a way of thinking that sets you apart from those who are mere employees earning a wage. Leaders will often display the following traits:

• Being an example to others.
• Having a superior technical or other skill.
• Good Initiative and entrepreneurial drive.
• Dediacated an preoccupied with a mission or goal.
• A clear sense of purpose .
• Results orientatated.
• A team player working well with others.
• Optomistic.
• A Strong belief in ones ability.
• Willing to encourage and nurture those around them.

There you have it!
