Self motivation and the home based business

Motivation is an essential factor in running a home based business. The entrepreneur needs to constantly motivate himself and those around to perform. An indicator of whether a home based business will be a success is the motivation levels of the owner and staff. Highly motivated people are self starters and it is this type of attitude that bodes well for a healthy business.

Some of the techniques that can be used to stimulate motivation are quite intuitive and just good common sense;

1. Consequences – Point out the consequences of peoples actions to them rather than just screaming and shouting. Explain how their chosen course of action has resulted in consequences that are not ideal.
2. Rewards- It’s as old as the hills. Reward people for good work. It makes them feel appreciated and keeps them motivated.
3. Measurable Performance incentives – Pay more for reaching set targets. Give people achievable targets and make them want to achieve them by rewarding them. The more they achieve the more they get.
4. Precise Detailed instructions – Be accurate and detailed in your instructions so that people know exactly what to do. Remove all confusion and excuses not to perform to specification.
5. Set goals – Set goals and objectives to ensure everyone is working towards a common understandable objective. Goals motivate when they are achievable and measurable.
6. Be Nice – Be fair to people. Have manners and respect them. Just be nice to them it costs nothing. If you anger people you make enemies.
7. Set Deadlines – Most people work better under pressure. Productivity increases by using deadlines. They must be achievable but they must stretch.
8. Build Team Spirit – Team work is essential in the home based office environment. People work better in teams and are more motivated to achieve by not letting the team down.
10. Recognize achievement – Make a point of catching people doing things right. Give them recognition in the form of an award or a prize presented in front of the whole team. People respond well tom being recognized.
11. Trust and Respect – People respond to trust by being trustworthy. Give people healthy doses of respect. It builds motivation
12. Create achievable challenges – People love a bit of competition and goals and targets. They enjoy working towards a goal and completing a challenge successfully.
13. Encourage creativity- Encourage people to be innovative. Allow them to make mistakes as long as it was in the spirit of creativity. Nurture their creative spirit.
14. Constructive criticism – As apposed to destructive criticism. People respond well to criticism if it is aimed at improving their effectiveness.
15. Move the goal posts – Push people to do better and better. Do not allow stagnation. Up the ante often and keep people progressing.
16. Have fun – Lighten up and make work a fun place to be. Motivation will build in a fun environment.
17. Change the environment often. – Offer people different tasks. It keeps them stimulated. Repetitive work leads to stagnation.

This is the type of environment that stimulates motivation. It is worthwhile installing at least some of them in your home based business to motivate staff but more importantly keep you motivated.
