Set realistic goals in your home business

There is the famous example of the question asked to an achiever and a non achiever.

“Why would you climb mount Everest? “

The non achiever would answer that he would climb the mountain because it presents him with a challenge. If he made it he would be a hero. If he failed then nobody expected him to have done it anyway. An achiever would answer, “Because it is there”. An achiever will never bite off more than he can chew. An achiever will stretch himself but not undertake a task that is patently beyond his capabilities.

It is important in a home based business to set goals and targets that are within its capabilities. There is no harm in stretching yourself, but trying to set impossible goals will soon lead to demoralization. The trick is to set achievable goals to take the home based business to a new level.

The key to growing the home based business is setting realistic goals. What is meant by realistic?

• Sensible
• Rational
• Reasonable
• Practical
• Prudent
• Achievable
• Within your capabilities
• Specific
• Measurable
• Time bound

There is the old adage that nothing breeds success like success. It is important to get into the habit of winning. It’s a good idea to start off by winning the small battles in your home based business. The more of your goals that are achieved then the higher your morale will climb.

Realistic goals also have a time frame to them. You may want to increase Sales by 20% over a twelve month period. This is a realistic goal that is achievable in a realistic time frame. It’s a good idea to set a time frame to all your home based business goals.

Surround yourself with reminders of the goal to be achieved. Place a nice big picture of Mount Everest on your desk if this is your goal. Every time you see it your focus will go back to your goal.

Be flexible when setting goals and especially when reviewing the goals that you have set for your home based business. If circumstances have changed it is worthwhile adjusting or even changing goals.

Make sure the goals you set are measurable against some type of standard so that you can gauge your progress towards the goal. The best goals are those that can be realistically and accurately monitored.

Setting goals can be exciting and rewarding as long as the follow the simple rules above. They are an essential part of your home based business.
