Evaluate your managerial and administrative skills

Operating a home based business requires that the entrepreneur has good managerial and administrative skills. If you are to be the sole employee of a home based business then it is even more important that you have these skills. Home based businesses require management and administration to run effectively and efficiently. It is important before embarking on launching a home based business that you take stock of the skills you have in this important area. The following are some of the indicators of good managers and administrators.

A good manager has certain character traits, experience in his field, and the skills necessary to do his job.

Managers

• Action-oriented;
• A manager must be able to plan, organize, instruct;
• Goal orientated ;
• Approachable;
• Able to deal with ambiguity;
• A sense of humor.
• A manager must be able to motivate those around him
• Work hard and long;
• Face adversity with resilience;
• A good communicator;
• Managers must have strong leadership skills;
• Managers must be able to identify and set priorities;
• Accept responsibility;
• A manager must be a team player and willing to work with different people from different backgrounds.
• A manager must be able to delegate where necessary and retain the correct work balance for each person;
• Mangers must separate private lives from business, and not bring personal issues to the workplace;
• Encourage people to grow and take calculated risks and not be scared to make honest mistakes in an endeavor to be creative;
• Encourage people to work smarter not harder.

These are some of the indicators of a good manager. It is worthwhile to honestly evaluate yourself against these indicators and truthfully assess if you have what it takes to be a manager. If you have obvious shortcomings these can be modified with some training.

Administrators;

• Thoroughly knowledgeable of the system or process;
• A good administrator should be looking at all situations from principles rather than just at procedures. There is no point a shop assistant making sure the till has all the coins in the right place if there is a massive queue building up.
• Ease of management, efficiency, streamlining a process, increasing communication, are all considerations in good administration.
• A good administrator is someone who can deal with people at all levels of staffing.

These are some of the requirements of a good administrator. How do you measure up as a prospective home based business entrepreneur?
