Advertising a home based business

Without a doubt advertising forms a fundamental part in the growth of your home based business. In order to make the public aware of your existence and the services and products on offer, some form of adverting has to take place. Large corporations spend huge amounts of money on advertising and advertising research, in order to find their target market. Large corporations are mostly large due to the fact of pumping millions of dollars and resources into creating brand awareness through advertising.

Small and home businesses just as their large compatriots have a need to grow market share in order to survive and expand profits. Advertising is an expensive exercise. To be really effective the campaign needs to be professionally constructed by experts in the field of advertising. Advertising costs rise directly in proportion to market penetration. Huge corporations spend literally millions of dollars per second to advertise in football game breaks. This type of advertising is beyond the reach of a home business.

Home businesses with a small budget for advertising do have opportunities to market their business at an affordable cost.

1. Local telephone directory and yellow pages.

It is possible to list your home business in the local business directories for reasonable rates. With a little inventiveness it is not too difficult to get noticed amongst all the listings. A local listing is a good start on the road to market awareness.

2. Advertisement in the community newspaper.

Community newspapers are a good medium to advertise a home business. The paper will usually run an interest article on the business in conjunction with a advert. This type of advert is usually affordable and highly effective for businesses trying to attract local patronage.

3. Regional or national newspaper.

This can be an expensive luxury that home businesses may not be able to afford. If it can be done a t a reasonable cost it is certainly worth it. A mistake here however can blow your budget quickly.

4. Specialist publications.

If you are a niche business looking to attract niche customers, then specialist publications may be the way to go. Specialist publications allow you to get in touch with the specific clientele you are catering for. Customers reading this type of publication are bound to be interested in your product. This type of advertising can be expensive but it at least targets your product to the right clientele.

5. TV slots, Radio.

If you can afford a TV or radio commercial then chances are you are not a home business. Regional radio may be an interesting medium, much the same as community newspapers. Perhaps you could arrange to be interviewed on community radio to talk about your exciting product?

6. EBay.

EBay is a great medium to peddle some of your products and services. It also serves as a form of advertising especially if you form an EBay shop. There are EBayers’ doing thousands of transaction per month running profitable businesses from their home. EBay is relatively cheap to run and maintain. It’s certainly worth consideration.

7. Web page on the World Wide Web.

Possibly the finest and cheapest form of advertising available to the home based entrepreneur is a web page. The web gives businesses access to millions of potential customers who surf the web every minute. Setting up a web page and making sure it is listed with the major search engines is a relatively cheap and effective form of advertising. Creating an effective web page is an art best left to the professionals. A great looking web page is money well spent. I would go as far as to say that a web page is the first piece of advertising a home business should acquire.

Advertising is essential to the home based business. At first glance it looks like a luxury that only the large corporation can afford. However with a bit of ingenuity and innovation it is possible to get market exposure for relatively little expense. Doing so on a shoestring budget is part of the challenge of home business.
