It is easy to be misled into thinking a home based business can be successfully run if the entrepreneur adopts a lackadaisical approach. It is true that home based businesses are less formal than a large corporation, and that there is a greater degree of flexibility when it comes to work hours. However flexibility should not be mistaken for tardiness. It is tempting when starting out a home based business to approach the issue of work hours and work volume in a haphazard fashion. Time management is as important if not more important to the home based business than to a larger corporation due to the fact that the home based business does not have the luxury of an endless supply of personnel. The home based business is often run by a single individual who has to manage his time carefully in order to complete many daily tasks. Time management via the setting of a work schedule is an indispensable tool to sound management in the home business environment.

Setting up a work schedule also allows you to set aside time for that all important daily tasks of ensuring that the home based business runs smoothly. It is easy to neglect daily tasks in favor of spending time on money earning matters. Neglecting maintenance tasks of a business is a sure fire way to long term ruination.

Setting up work schedules is an important discipline. Time can be set aside for daily, weekly, monthly, and annual tasks. Cash books should be written up daily. Wage records are written up weekly. Salary records are recorded monthly. Tax returns are completed annually. These are examples of tasks that can be scheduled way ahead of the time. It pays to first allocate all the definite must do tasks and then work towards completing a wish list. Make time for calling clients and marketing in your schedule. A work schedule gives you a structure and a set of goals with time limits to work to.

Work scheduling and time management are the cornerstones of being a successful entrepreneur. Work schedules add the quality of service that a home based business strives for. Work schedules add value to your forward planning. All the above seems quite obvious and intuitive. It is surprising how disorganized many individuals and many corporations are when it comes to time management.
