Building Your Business Network

If you hide in your shell and remain oblivious to the world outside, how will you sell your product or offer your service? Networking is clearly an indispensable tool in the growth of your business. It helps you connect with the prime movers of your business, recognizing people as a valuable asset.

Business networking is essentially a marketing strategy implemented to increase business opportunities by way of establishing contacts with other people of the same industry. Some entrepreneurs believe that this approach is less expensive as compared to the lofty advertising fees charged by companies. However, business networking is time consuming and requires extra effort and devotion.

Now it’s time to rethink the context of networking. Many professionals believe that business networking is something that simply needs to be done and so they wander about aimlessly – attending business functions here and there just to get the task over with in the least possible time. They see it as some sort of mediocre item in their to-do list, resulting in a lack of personalized attention. Their nonchalance is felt by their colleagues and sure enough, nobody has ever taken them seriously.

Networking should be thought of as an opportunity to showcase your business, to let your colleagues be aware of your company, and to make sure that they can reach you should the need arise in the future. It is about building and strengthening ties with the business world and ensuring that your company has a strong presence in your community. To do this, one has to commit to the undertaking seriously. Take time to talk like you were out to gain a friend, not just to chat hurriedly and go by like a breeze.

Where can you network? Business professionals recommend the internet, trade shows, seminars, associations, and club memberships. These are the key places to meet colleagues, friends, business associates and potential clients. Always remember that you are there for the same reason as they all are. Because you happen to share a common goal, everyone expects you to have something to contribute. And while you’re there, make sure you have some business cards handy to pass around. Your business card should contain the necessary information: name, company, address, email, mobile and business office numbers plus your company’s logo and tagline. It should have a simple yet catchy design that will speak well of yourself and your company.
The extreme popularity of the internet has prompted more and more businessmen to delve into online business marketing. One proven medium is through blogging which simply means having your own business blog where you can regularly post your thoughts and advertise your company as well. You will be surprised to know that your followers will be those who can relate with you, either because you share the same interests or you belong to the same industry.

Another success factor in business networking also lies in the ability to follow-up. What use will a business card be if you allow them to gather dust on your work table? The best thing to do is create a network database that will allow you to store such information. Constant communication is a must and therefore should be given proper attention. Send emails, newsletters, company updates and blog invitations to generate a response.

In whatever areas you choose, always remember that business networking is all about sharing and helping each other to attain success. In the process, you meet colleagues with common interests as you have, with the same skills and in the same industry. All businesses, regardless of size, need other people and other businesses in order to grow, proving once again that no man is an island indeed. Trite but true.
