Home Business Management 101

It does not take a genius to run a home-based business effectively, but it does take a good amount of sensibility and organization. A business degree is not exactly necessary for a home-based business to succeed. There are simple and fundamental guidelines that any person with an excellent wit can easily carry out and understand. Even top-notch companies fail simply because it was not being managed properly.
Operating a home-based business solo is a continuous day to day struggle. What with the constant stream of information coming in, your concern for doing everything on your list, emails and phone calls, client visits, and endless home chores heightened by the children’s whining and your spouse’s demands; you can easily slip into a disoriented state and realize only too late that you were not even cut out for it in the first place.
To avoid this kind of dilemma, here are some of the most fundamental guidelines in managing a home-based business on your own. These simple and realistic business strategies will help you get one step closer to achieving your business goals.
1. Keep a record of everything and file them comprehensively. This includes all daily transactions – be it in orders, sales or purchases. Other important documentation would be your detailed business operating expenses and other similar costs. It is very important to keep and file receipts because you will need these for tax purposes. Your balance statement at the end of any period will reflect your total sales, total costs and total profits. In the same light, your order and payment records will help backtrack transactions needed to verify any potential dispute posed by a client.
2. Open a savings and checking account to be used exclusively for the business. Deposit all your sales money into this bank account at least once a week. This will ensure your money goes to a safe place. Pay all your business suppliers, home office utility bills and other business expenses with a check debited to this account. At the end of each month, you will have an approximate calculation of profit and expenses. This will serve as a basis of some important decisions such as cutting back on operating expenses when the profit margin is not too good.
3. Keep track of schedules and follow them with devotion. One effective way of managing your schedule is to have an updated planner for your appointments, orders and deliveries. Some businessmen tack calendars on their walls and mark the dates accordingly while others write down schedules on a white board. Some find online calendars effective such as the one offered by Yahoo, because it has sound alerts and synchronization features with popular PDA phones and other handheld devices.
4. Keep ongoing relationships with your clients. A single purchase or a closed contract with a client does not mean your relationship ends there. Consider this an opportunity to make him return for your product or service regularly. Establish camaraderie and go the extra mile by offering your friendship: this is what a personalized home-business should mean. Customers will likely remember your positive and pleasant attitude. Update them regularly with emails and newsletters about your current promotions; though be sure they are relatively short and concise.
5. Separate personal life from business life. Having a home-based business can be very stressful because you are practically torn between two important aspects in your life. The mere idea of running a business in your home can in itself cause you to worry. The secret to a successful business and career is in time and stress management. Business hours are strictly for business just as family time is strictly for family. Unwind at the end of every work day and keep your thoughts free.
Always keep in mind that you should be in control of business, not your business in control of you. Achieving equilibrium in your life is without doubt attainable! With enough determination and self-discipline, you will be sure to reap in positive results for your home-based business and your life in general.
