Cash Flow Management

Cash flow management is the process of managing, analyzing and controlling the cash flow of the business. It is one of the most important aspects of managing a business as this can help avoid a whole set of problems. What it defines is the inflow and outflow of cash form any business. No business can survive extended periods of time without cash inflows as this affects payments that need to be made. Having bills that have not been paid can mean that the business may have to shut down. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that a cash flow analysis is performed on a regular basis to counter any problems that may arise.

A gap in cash can occur when the inflow and outflow do not keep pace with each other. This could be due to various reasons. Purchases that have been made, fees that have been paid and other day to day expenses that need to be taken care off mean that the outflow is a steady one. However the inflows of cash depend upon the turnover of the business and also the kind of credit facilities that the business may offer or get from their suppliers.

One of the easy ways to predict a cash flow problem would be to take a close look of the unpaid bills due at the end of the month and the sales forecast. If a gap exists, it is a clear indication that there is a cash flow problem that needs to be managed in a better way. Some of the corrective measures that may be taken are;

Reducing the credit limits offered to customers by including a small discount for early payments. This will not only help improve cash inflow but will also increase customer loyalty at times as a better price is something that everyone looks for.

Tracking accounts and overdue payments actively to ensure that cash is not locked up with certain clients over a prolonged period of time. This will help in the overall management of the cash that is needed and drive away problems of cash inflow.

To manage your cash in an effective manner it is necessary that an analysis is carried out on a regular basis. An analysis of the cash flow shows you the inflow and outflow of cash into the business and helps in the purpose of maintaining a regular cash flow into the business. It can also help in having a steady and effective grip over the business at all times.

Cash flow management is important to any business due to the importance that it gains in letting the business survive in a healthy manner. At no time can this feature of the business be neglected.
