Many individuals find that working from home is very rewarding. That could be why the rate of recent entrepreneurs has increased so dramatically in the last decade. With so many different areas to choose from, it’s becoming increasingly more difficult for people to find a reason NOT to get into the entrepreneurial spirit. Think about it. You have the freedom of choosing your business goals, the specific type of business, the business hours and the quantum of earning. Where else can you find those things? Certainly not at your day job!

Home based businesses require a great deal of planning and preparation before they can truly be launched into the ravenous market of today. Many small business owners have found themselves deep in debt or even out of business due simply to improper planning. You won’t make that mistake, though, because we have come up with a checklist that will help you along the way.

Getting Started Checklist:

 Research your business options.
 Choose one that best suits your needs and interests. Make sure that the business has the potential to exceed your monetary needs as well as provide you with enjoyable work.
 Keep in mind that the right attitude is a necessary quality when you are involved in home based business.
 Equip yourself with all of the knowledge you can regarding the business that you choose. (Product, services, policies, potential earnings, etc.)
 Ensure that you have created a household budget and a business budget and stick to both!
 Make sure that you have additional funds set aside to pay for your living and business expenses while you are getting started.
 Make sure that you prepare both a Business and Financial Plan.
 Establish your business entity.
 Set up your back office operations.
 Learn how to market your business.
 Network, network, and network.
 Again, do your research. It’s the key to staying on top of the competition!

It almost goes without saying that researching your business options first will help you decide what type of business you want to get into. You can research the various business programs available within each specific type of business or you can even opt for something completely different and start your own. The lovely thing about conducting research is that it can often give you ideas for something totally different!

Now that you’ve decided what you want to do, you need to make sure that your attitude is in check. Starting a home based business is not always easy and you need to have patience and positivity on your side. It can sometimes take a little while for things to really get moving, but if you are determined that your business will succeed, your positive attitude will carry you much farther than you ever guessed.

You should always try to learn everything that there is to know about the business that you choose. If you can manage to learn everything quickly, you can begin to implement the proper measures into your business and success will surely follow. The same is true with any products that you may be promoting or selling.

The business plan is a very important component for any type of business. Your business plan draws the roadmap for any and all future business. It should contain detailed information such as business objectives, milestones, target customers, sales targets, sales projections, etc. Your financial plan needs to include all your short term and long term financial goals, cash flow, estimates on overheads. Preparing a detailed financial plan is very essential if you approach a banker or financial institutions for funding your home based business.

It is essential to decide what type of business entity is needed for your proposed business. Is it going to be a sole proprietorship or partnership? This is the time to decide. You may be required to obtain licensure, in certain circumstances, and you could also be subject to compliance checks to ensure that you are meeting all regulations.

Once your home based business is established, keeping it on track is very essential. You are responsible for handling customer queries, compliments, recording transactions and the compliance of statuary regulations on a daily basis. Unless you have proper back office support, your home based business may not function normally and meet your expectations.

If you want take your business to new heights, you need to reach out a large amount of people. To achieve this, you need to exploit every opportunity to network. Network with your customers, friends, vendors and even with your competitors in every possible way.
